The Absa Private Banking Credit Card is a Visa Signature card built for higher earners who want lounge access, travel cover and cash back on their spending.

Absa recommends an income of about R62,500 per month. The card page lists a limit of up to R228,000, but your own limit and interest rate are set after an affordability assessment.

Before you apply, it helps to see what the card costs and which of the premium perks you would actually use.

Absa Private Banking Credit Card: main benefits

  • Lounge access. You get 24 complimentary visits a year, plus 2 guest visits, to Bidvest Premier lounges.
  • Visa Airport Companion. Six complimentary visits a year plus one guest per visit at partner lounges.
  • Up to 57 interest-free days. This applies on qualifying transactions when you meet the repayment conditions.
  • Cash back with Absa Rewards. You earn cash back on card spending rather than points.
  • Travel insurance. Automatic travel insurance applies to eligible international bookings.

Who can apply?

You need to be 18 or older with a valid South African ID or smart card. Absa also asks for proof of residence and three consecutive months of proof of income.

The card is aimed at Private Banking clients and every application goes through an affordability assessment, so approval is never guaranteed.

Quick overview

Feature Absa Private Banking Credit Card
Recommended income R62,500 per month
Monthly fee R220
Credit limit Up to R228,000
Interest-free period Up to 57 days

Who may find it useful?

  • Higher earners who already bank with Absa Private Banking
  • Frequent travellers who will use the lounge visits
  • People who prefer cash back over a points scheme
  • Cardholders who pay the balance in full every month

When another option may be better

The card may not be the best fit if you rarely travel or your income is well below the recommended level. A simpler card with a lower monthly fee can cost much less if you do not use the premium extras.

Costs to check

Absa lists a R220 monthly fee. There are no transaction fees on most purchases, but prepaid airtime, data and utilities are excluded. Check your personal interest rate, because carrying a balance can be expensive.
